Plan Your Meals for a Whole Season with a CSA
Do you like to cook and eat fresh, local food? How about supporting farmers? Is convenience important to you when food shopping? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, then you should definitely consider signing up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) this season. CSAs are an easy way to stay committed to eating healthy.
Ok, let's back up. What is a CSA? A CSA is a system that connects farms to consumers. Farms that offer a CSA ask for an investment upfront, then harvest your return over an agreed upon timespan. In other words, you buy a share of a farm's harvest; in return, the farmers are able to take the money raised from selling shares and re-invest it in production, maintenance and any of a number of things that require capital expenditures. Then, once they harvest during the season, you receive a weekly box of the freshiest (usually picked that morning) produce, eggs and sometimes dairy or meat.
Farms may work independently or cooperatively. In Philly, we have several options to choose from that vary in price and deliverables. Here's a few to check out:
Greensgrow Farm has recently updated their website (Congrats!), which makes it very easy to navigate and learn about their CSA plan. They even include a sampling based on last year's box: June: 1 piece LeRaysville cheddar or pepperjack cheese • Choice of 1 dairy item • 2 lb. Red Potatoes • 2 zucchini or yellow squash • 1 pint blueberries • 6 fancy pickling cucumbers • 1 bunch collard greens • 1 quart sour cherries • 1 bag Asian salad blend • 1 bunch dill.
