Despite the surprise snowstorm last Sunday, the annual Yuddie and Phil Borck Bikkur Cholim Basketball Tournament went ahead as planned at Kohelet Yeshiva High School on the Main Line. Inclement weather proved no match for high-flying hoops action: The charity event was a success, raising $10,000 to help people who incur expenses when visiting their loved ones in hospitals.

The tournament was created following the deaths of Phil and Yuddie Borck, a father and son who passed away within 3 months of each other in 2012. Both had devoted their lives to raising money for and taking care of sick children in Philadelphia-area hospitals. This was especially true in wintertime — Phil and Yuddie brought gifts to hospitalized children around the Delaware Valley during Chanukah and Christmas.

Malkie Schwartz, the daughter of Phil Borck and the sister of Yuddie, runs the Merion-based Bikkur Cholim organization along with Susie Wohlgelertner. Kohelet Yeshivah High School both hosted and co-sponsored the tournament.
