A San Francisco organization plans to award 10 Jewish teens identified as leaders who help repair the world with $36,000 each.
The Helen Diller Family Foundation will give Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards to five teens from California and five from other parts of the United States.
Diller, a Bay Area-philanthropist, started the award program through her organization in 2007, initially just for California teens; last year, she expanded its scope.
“Today’s teens are tomorrow’s leaders,” stated Diller in a news release. “It is our hope that this award will recognize some outstanding young people who are already helping to repair the world. By celebrating Jewish teens committed to social action in innovative ways, we hope to inspire many more young people to follow their example.”
Recipients last year included Ben Hirschfeld, a 19-year-old from New York whose organization, LITsolar, provides solar lanterns to people in developing countries.
