Barrack Academy Celebrates 'Israel at 61'
The school plans a special tribute to Tel Aviv's centennial. This thriving Israeli city, which means "Hill of Spring," has enjoyed a sister city relationship with Philadelphia since 1966.
Students will mix and mingle at a traditional Israeli cafe; learn about the special connection between the two communities from Israeli Consul General Daniel Kutner and Federation President Leonard Barrack; shop at a recreation of Nachalat Binyamin, Tel Aviv's famous marketplace; learn Krav Maga, Israeli martial arts; and enjoy Israeli dancing.
A falafel lunch will be served on towels under beach umbrellas on a sandy stretch of ersatz shoreline.
Following their feast, students will see a performance by Towers of Tel-Aviv, a 24-person Israeli youth band, which is touring the Philadelphia area. Members of the troupe are staying at the homes of Barrack students.
Their appearance is made possible through the support of Federation and the Israel Club of Barrack Hebrew Academy.
