Stars & Society

October 29, 2009 - Michael Elkin, Arts & Entertainment Editor

Has Mr. Spock made a star trek to ... Elkins Park? In a way: Leonard Nimoy pointed his ears in the direction of Beth Sholom Congregation, narrating the new documentary that will greet those coming to the historic synagogue's Visitor's Center, to be dedicated on Nov. 15.
Lee B. Zeplowitz
Among those visiting for the event will be featured speaker Paul Goldberger , architecture critic for the New Yorker. It may be more than the Force that landed Nimoy for the narration of "An American Synagogue: Frank Lloyd Wright, Mortimer Cohen and the Making of Beth Sholom," whose creative documentary crew sports a number of Emmy Awards; it was actually Cantor David F. Tilman, whose friendship with -- and phone call to -- the sci-fi icon and Jewish activist got the job done. You don't have to be a member to join in the event; even Klingons are invited.

Must be something in the seltzer because one of Beth Sholom's neighbors up 611 -- Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel -- has just become part of the mitzvah "Magnificent Seven," one of only a septet of synagogues nationwide to earn a Legacy Heritage Israel Engagement Grant. (Beth Sholom received an innovation grant from the same foundation.) It'll all go to K.I.'s "Israelology" program, with Ellen Tilman getting an added position to her library duties as Israel coordinator. Hey, ya think the Phils have a dynasty going? Between them, it seems David and Ellen almost run Old York Road.

Michael M. Mustokoff

Lee-way: Lee B. Zeplowitz of the Zeplowitz Group, a wealth-coaching biz -- "Stars" would love to hear their fight song -- has been named a member of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia legacy advisers group.

Michael M. Mustokoff, a partner in the local office of Duane Morris LLP, is now a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a prestigious org in which you're capped and gowned by proving over years to be a true credit to the profession.

Dyn-o-mite! Even J.J. would give a shout-out to Philadelphia area's Jillian Apfelbaum, who landed her first major co-producing credit with "Black Dynamite," receiving some TNT-worthy rave reviews around the country. But then, you knew that, didn't you, parents Lynn and John of Rydal, celebrating their daughter's good times.

Shafrira Goldwasser

Now maybe she'll be able to get a good table! Somehow, "Stars" doubts there was a problem in the first place for Gale Feinstein of the Omni Hotel, named the city's "Concierge of the Year" by those in the know. Now, Gale, about those Pearl Jam tickets.

Is it safe to go back online? It is these days, thanks to Shafrira Goldwasser, the Internet security expert whose work in cryptography at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has earned her a 2010 Franklin Institute Award, to be handed out in April.

And for those celebrating this Saturday night, what truer a trick or treat than a bar of halvah -- and what better way to get back at kids' parents you can't stand by hiking their dental bills.
