Stars of David

September 24, 2009 - Michael Elkin, Arts & Entertainment Editor

H. Marc tepper
Ah, the lovely chamber music of business being done as it should be. Conducting these days: H. Marc Tepper, newly elected president of the America-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Central Atlantic Region. Maestro, how about a performance of the "Recovery Suite"? And if anyone's looking for insurance he'll do a great job -- well, he is vice chairman of insurance bigs Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney/Philadelphia Branch.

Give that man a Chair! David N. Hofstein of Hofstein, Weiner & Levit has been honored by the American Bar Association, whose Family Law Section gave him its Chair's Award. Obvious choice since no one asked to table the motion.

Abramowitz, who co-chairs the bankruptcy, insolvency and restructuring group of Cozen O'Connor, is now a lifetime trustee of the Raymond and Gertrude R. Saltzman Foundation, which gives out grants to aid the Jewish elderly and impoverished children.

Linda Friedman and daughter Melissa

In the running: The fifth "Make Your Mark 5K Run/Walk & 1 Mile Fun Walk" hits the road Oct. 4, memorializing the life and achievements of Mark Allen Friedman, who died five years ago of melanoma at age 34. Helping run the Run are Linda Friedman, Mark's Mom and a board member of the foundation; and his sister Melissa, board secretary

Don't worry, be happy! And get a head start from Dr. Tal Ben-Shar, whose nickname of the "Happiness Professor" at Harvard U. puts a smile on many a face. Grin and bear it: Jerusalem University Online brings him to Temple Adath Israel of the Main Line in Merion on the eve of Sept. 24, where he'll talk of "Positive Psychology and Judaism." Happy to bring him to the area are chairs Amy and Daniel Erlbaum; Robin Batoff; and Jessica and David Solomon.

Josh Shapiro

Educator Maxwell Kushner has been on quite a learning curve since leaving Philadelphia a while back. An adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University, the former localite has been honored by the school's college of education with a certificate of appreciation "for outstanding performance and lasting contribution."

Legislate while driving? "Stars" doesn't think so. But State Rep. Josh Shapiro of Montco has been chosen and invited by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to join a national summit in the nation's capital at the end of the month, dealing with the hazards of distracted driving. He'll be -- what's that? You say something?
