Philadelphia Gets a Winner

Mattleman, heralded as "educator, social entrepreneur and civic leader," was feted with the Philadelphia Award in ceremonies at Temple University. The award, created 67 years ago by Edward W. Bok, puts Mattleman in a book of achievers whose contents have helped shape the history of the city in legendary ways. Here, the honoree (right) -- founder and prexy of ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships -- is saluted by Mayor Michael Nutter and Dr. Happy Craven Fernandez, chair of the Philadelphia Award trustees, as well as prexy of Moore College of Art & Design.

Prominent communal leaders Lynne and Harold Honickman applaud the choice of honoree at the event. Among her many accomplishments, Mattleman was founding director of the Mayor's Commission on Literacy during the City Hall tenure of Wilson B. Goode.
They could have gone anywhere, but David Cohn and Harold Honickman went to Temple, where the ceremony was held in Mitten Hall, and where Mattleman had served as a professor.
