Gay Schader, 78, Donated Holocaust Items to Longtime Synagogue

Gay Schader, 78, former owner of the Antique Loft in Jenkintown, died June 22. The former Gay Engel, she was also a resident of Palm Beach, Fla.

Schader graduated from Olney High School, the Marjorie Webster Junior College Finishing School and attended the University of Miami.

She was a life member of Hadassah and a longtime member of Congregation Kol Ami of Elkins Park. Along with her husband, Byron Schader, she donated to Kol Ami a 300-year-old Torah, a yad and an antique Kiddish cup that were recovered from the Holocaust. She also embroidered the covering of that Torah.

Schader was a talented knitter and excelled in needlepoint. She knitted hats for children with cancer. She also was a certified gemologist and a calligrapher.

She was the oldest living member of the Ashbourne Country Club and was also a member of Meadowlands Country Club. While in Florida, she served as a volunteer at the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach.

In addition to her husband, Schader is survived by daughter Jill Schader Powell; son Dr. Randolph Schader; sister Rhoda Weiner; and five grandchildren.
