Moss Grows an Artful Reputation

May 29, 2008 - Rita Rosen Poley, Jewish Exponent Feature

MossRehab presented its first show featuring professional artists with disabilities in 1979. At that time, the hospital was a national leader in this area of the arts as its juried exhibition was one of the first such displays on the East Coast.

"All About Art at MossRehab," the 2008 exhibition of art and fine crafts by artists with disabilities, continues through June 15 at the hospital's Elkins Park campus.

The exhibition this year honors Robert Drucker and the late Susan Beneman.

Blue Bell resident Drucker's commitment to people with disabilities ranges from the art show to the Drucker Brain Injury Center.

"All About Art at Moss Rehab" refers to works displayed in many media.

Beneman, who served as co-chair of the past two exhibitions, was instrumental in launching the show in 1979. A longtime advocate of artists with disabilities, she was a chair of the MossRehab board, and an active member of Albert Einstein Medical Center's board. MossRehab's permanent art collection, displayed throughout the campus, will be named in her memory.

On viewing the exhibition I was particularly taken with works by a number of artists who are working with manipulated photographic processes, as well as by the work of two metal artists.

Rebecca Martinez, Leigha Cohen and Maxim Tzinman each have a distinctive approach to viewing the natural world through the viewfinder of a camera. Martinez's take on baseball fields, Cohen's views of the Princeton area and Tzinman's look at people in the cityscape are each worth a trip to see this exhibition. In addition, metalworks by Cynthia Herbst and Joy Raskin offer an attractive alternative to the wall art that comprises most of the exhibition.

Local artist Sal Panasci continues to explore watercolor. Instead of his familiar pastel landscapes, we are treated here to an attractive study series of fruit still lifes.

This sales exhibition showcases multimedia works by 68 artists from throughout the United States, Israel, South Africa, Canada and India.
