Stars of David

September 27, 2007 - Michael Elkin, Arts & Entertainment Editor

Okay, "Stars" has some advice since last week's column: It's okay to start eating again! And speaking of feasting on accomplishments: Dennis Glick, one of Huntingdon Valley's most scintillating of "Stars" -- and a credit to the accounting profession as a CPA -- will be honored in his role as chairman of the exec of B'nai B'rith International on Oct. 7 by BB Lodge 1622 at the Blair Mill Inn.

Carl Gersh -- oh that kid! -- has been honored as one of the "2007 Forty Under 40" leading lights by N.J. Biz mag, with honors handed out earlier this week at the Palace in Somerset, N.J. This Jersey boy -- founder of BeSeen Communications in Moorestown -- will also be highlighted in the Oct. 1 issue of the pub.

Robert Reinstein

He's the best, so why not work on the "Best?" Acclaimed film editor Geoffrey Richman, whose healthy career includes "Sicko," is in post-production on "May the Best Man Win."

Talking about best men: It's case closed for Robert Reinstein, who just announced his retirement as dean of Temple U.'s School of Law. After some 20 years, Reinstein reportedly holds the title of "longest serving dean of an American law school." But don't pop the champagne just yet; he'll be leaving in June to go back to teaching.

Down to an art: The Old City Jewish Arts Center's "Tishrei Art Expo 2007" is featuring the acclaimed work of Sharon Ritz, whose mosaic violin from past days reverberates still in the minds of fans.

Wired: Alan Dannenbaum, formerly Comcast senior veepee for content acquisition, has been upped to exec veepee of network distribution. That's great, Alan. Now, maybe you can connect me to someone who can fix my "On Demand" button?

Wistar Institute of Philadelphia is only one of a handful of institutes to receive funding from the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, giving it membership in the prestigious Institution Without Walls.

Music to "Stars" ears is the announcement that lawyer Leonard Bernstein, a partner at Reed Smith, LLP, has been voted in as board prexy of Support Center for Child Advocates.

Dancing with the "Stars": Arthur M. Kaplan, also an attorney -- he's with Fine, Kaplan & Black -- has stepped onto the board of Dance Affiliates.

Bored with the Bard? Never, avers Leslie Reidel! And he's got the creds to prove it. The eminent theater faculty prof from the University of Delaware wears his scholarly side proudly; he just finished teaching a National Endowment of the Humanities seminar in "Shakespeare: Enacting the Text," going from the hamlet of Newark, Del., to that of Stratford-on-Avon, teaching the course on the two intercontinental campuses along with fellow university prof Jay Halio. Reidel is back in time to oversee work as artistic director of Philly's Enchantment Theatre Company, an enchanting life indeed.

Wasn't that Dresher's Mike Goldstein playing lead guitar when the Savannah, Ga.-based Street Circus Symphony stopped by for some local shows late last month?

Philadelphia-area resident Miriam Leshem was the lone localite to be honored with the Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education, given to 76 teachers -- sound the trombones! -- throughout North America.

Yum-yum! Casual Catering Inc. of Glenside, the food fare of Jon Waxman and Joe Fryday -- wonder if they ever catered "Dragnet" -- was named best in the biz in Montco, earning a Neighbors Choice Award in its category from The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Joining the prestigious lecture podium at the 92nd Street Y in New York this fall is local guy Leonard Getz, discussing his book, From Broadway to the Bowery: Bad Boys of Film.

Good guy Morris Gocial, CPA, is the new prexy of the America-Israel Chamber of Commerce.

Free at last! Cozen O'Connor's Betsy A. Gerber and Elena Park took home the Pro Bono Award from the Pennsylvania Bar Association.

And Justin Goldstein has been named chair, Young Lawyers Division, American Bar Association. Or as it's now known -- Justin time.
