'Scene' Contest: Win Tickets to Tony Kushner Musical

March 08, 2007 - Michael Elkin, Arts & Entertainment Editor

Joilet F. Harris is Caroline in the Arden's "Caroline, or Change."
Can "Caroline, or Change" change the way you view Jewish/African-American relations?

See for yourself as Tony Kushner's musical of "race, rage and civil rights" comes to the Arden Theatre Company stage, beginning Thursday, March 8.

Each of three winners will receive a pair of tickets to a performance of the show during its month-long run; the musical has been culled from Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Kushner's own New Orleans background.

With book and lyrics by Kushner and a blues/klezmer-infused score by Jeanine Tesori, "Caroline, or Change" focuses on the relationship between the title character, a domestic for a Jewish family, and the family's young son who learns of the real world at her apron strings in the early '60s.

The Jewish Exponent is sponsoring this production, a Philadelphia premiere; the show opened on Broadway in 2003.

The Arden is also scheduling a series of talks about the themes touched on in the show in conjunction with the National Constitution Center, Temple University's Institution for the Study of Race and Social Thoughts, and the Rosenbach Museum and Library.

To enter, send your name, address and daytime phone number (postcards only) to "Scene-Arden," c/o the Jewish Exponent, 2100 Arch St., Philadelphia, PA 19103.

Entries must be received by noon on Tuesday, March 13.

For Arden information, call 215-922-1122.
