Area Students Head for Haiti
Students themselves conceived of the project and have raised nearly $70,000 to make it happen. Of the 18 students set to travel to the Caribbean for two weeks -- and miss school -- at least seven are Jewish.
The students' philanthropic efforts are being harnessed through buildOn, a national non-profit organization that mobilizes teenagers to perform community service stateside and travel to developing nations to help construct new school buildings.
Lower Merion students have formed their own buildOn chapter -- which has 250 members -- and through this group have volunteered in a host of local community-building endeavors.
Students raised the funds by organizing a series of bowling nights and talent shows.
