ADL Calls Out Former Congress Members Speaking at Anti-Semitic Rally
The participation of two former Congress members in an upcoming July 4th gathering of white supremacists who have expressed anti-Semitic views and conspiracy theories prompted the Anti-Defamation League to contact news organizations about the event.
Barry Morrison, ADL Philadelphia Regional Director, said that while the organization always monitors such events and alerts law enforcement if necessary, the organization does not want to bring any additional attention to groups that “tread in bigotry and anti-Semitism.”
The difference here is that the list of scheduled speakers at Freedompalooza 2013 includes Cynthia McKinney, a black former Congresswoman from Georgia who has promoted conspiracy theories and anti-Israel rhetoric, and James Traficant, a Congressman from Ohio who was convicted on federal corruption charges and has expressed anti-Semitic and anti-Israel views since his release.
McKinney was part of an envoy in 2009 that brought aid to Hamas in Gaza and has said that "the Zionists were successful in kicking me out of Congress two times."
Traficant contributes a column and just began hosting a radio show for American Free Press, a publication that espouses anti-Semitic views and provided space for organizers of Freedompalooza to express anti-Semitic rhetoric.
“We think it’s very important to set a standard that when one enjoys the perks of serving in government and representing the people of this country, that they not further aid and abet racist and anti-Semitic ideology,” Morrison said.
