A Box to Make the Bad Stuff Go Away
Five-year-old Johnathan Altenburgh displays his "Jared Box" with Myra Goldman (left) and Carol Fink, members of the Hesed Committee of Tiferet Bet Israel in Blue Bell. The Philadelphia Unit of the Shriners Hospitals for Children received 30 such boxes assembled during the congregation's Mitzvah Day. Jared, a 5-year-old boy who died of brain-stem cancer in 2000, carried a backpack full of toys and games to health appointments. The project was geared to bring the gift of play to chronically ill children.
