'Friends of IDF' Makes It to Philly
The Friends of the Israel Defense Forces is opening a new chapter in Philadelphia.
Executive director Linda Grife, a social worker from Wyndmoor whose 21-year-old daughter joined the IDF after making aliyah three years ago, said the mission is to bring the local Jewish and Israeli community closer by raising awareness and support for the troops.
The organization, founded 30 years ago by a group of Holocaust survivors, provides soldiers with food, Shabbat candles, holiday gifts, a getaway on a day off -- "things that we don't get in the army," said program director Tzvia Wexler, who served in the IDF before moving to the States.
The organization also runs programs to support "lone" soldiers, families of fallen soldiers and those who need financial assistance for college.
A kick-off event will be held on May 10, Yom Ha'atzmaut.
